Definitely have to nominate Vladimir Horowitz for this award (that is, when he was in his early days). CHeck out the end of his B-minor Scherzo (double octaves) or his Tchaikovsky B-flat minor concerto for examples. Rachmaninoff apparently said to him after a performance of the Tchaikovsky ‘your octaves are the loudest and fastest, but I must tell you, it was not musical. It was not neccessary.’ Horowitz joked and said he only did it so that he could please crowds, have success, and not have to go back to Russia. Whatever the case, he was the octave-guy.
