Weird. While that was a nice recital and all, it probably wouldn’t crack my top 40 Freire recordings… Maybe you haven’t explored him enough? Or you’re expecting him to be something he’s not?
I remember that video of Friere astounding Argerich by sight reading Schumann/Liszt Widmung
I’ve heard a fair bit of his work, and I’ve liked just about all of it. I don’t know, perhaps uninteresting is a better word than forgettable. I remember I tried to explain it earlier with that listening to him is like reading a newspaper which only reports good news. All’s well, everyone’s happy, so eventually you just put it down and do something else instead. With me there’s nothing in his playing which generates interest, or leaves that memory behind which makes me return to him.
Brew’s recital was something else however. He created such a cathedral like atmosphere (I know the recording reinforced it, but I mean his calm and large playing), and interpretatively he completely turned around the Brahms-3 for me. I’ve never liked it earlier, but here did.
One other rec of his I remember - the 4 Scherzi on Teldec.
Well there’s nothing wrong with feeling that way. Some artists’ voices we identify with and others not so much. There are tons of great pianists that don’t quite do it for me either. Though I tend to eventually come around, such as with Gieseking or Kempff.
And tru, I do love that Scherzi rec.
