Mahler always struck me as the kind of guy who writes really bad love poetry and never gets invited to parties.

Good question. For me it’s just that I wasn’t really that knowledgable about the orchestral repertoire. So listening to the Bruckner symphonies for the first time, is quite an earth shattering experience when you have never heard the music before. I have just focused too much on the piano repertoire in the past.

Musically I guess that solo piano music is easier to write for if you are trying something completely new. For instance I don’t think it was by chance that Schoenberg’s op. 11 was written for solo piano. Orchestral music is just more “public” so to say.

The major advantage of orchestral music is the soronities and the colours.

Now I listen perhaps 60/40 to orchestral vs solo piano music.

BUT if I want to devote 30+ minz to one work den Beethoven + Mahler offer amazing rewardz
