The Barcarolle is one of those pieces which is “finished” for me thanks to KZ’s rec. I’m happy to listen to other people play it, but I have no real reason to.
The PF is more tricky, but there are many good recs of it. I think my favourites are Bozhanov and Richter.
Pollini has turned me on to several works over the years, even if I’ve quickly found other favourites in them once I’ve become interested. But solid is a great word for him - he often conveys the music well and makes you see what’s in it.
I haven’t yet found a recording or performance of the Barcarolle that has fully satisfied me (KZ does come close). Rosa Tamarkina in the Polonaise-Fantaisie for me.
Great to see another Norma discussion above! I am quite keen to revisit this one. I last played it in 2011, but unfortunately didn’t get a high-quality recording of a performance. I have this video, but the sound is woeful (although some aspects of the pianism came off quite well): YouTube
The Barcarolle is a hard one. I think my favourite is the early Rubinstein recording. For Polonaise-Fantaisie my favourite is Kapell at the Frick collection (a top 3 recital for me, also has my favourite Pictures). I like Richter and Fiorentino as well, but Kapell’s number 1.
