With headphones on I sense a weird background pulsing before it finally becomes apparent in the 17 to 18 k area.

Doesn’t this depend on how loud the volume is on your computer? At first I didn’t hear it till 12k at 40% volume, turned it up to 75% and heard it at around 17.7k. At full volume, 18.9k.
Endnote 1: It says below that the test should be done at moderate volume on decent headphones. Again, at 50% volume I got 13k. If I had in-ear buds, I’d probably catch it a little sooner. I’m using Meze 99 Classics on a MacBook.
Endnote 2: The Meze’s are medium impedance at 32 ohms. I think earbuds are in the 15-25 range, which means less power (in case of a laptop less volume). So idk, I guess my hearing is so-so for a mofo in his mid 30’s (late 30’s in less than 2 weeks).
