Bach/Busoni: Toccata, Adagio & Fugue in C major, BWV 564
Liszt: Sonata in B minor
Chopin: Six Etudes
Chopin: Three Mazurkas
Chopin: Polonaise in A-flat major, Op.53
Liszt: Paganini-Etude No.6 in A minor
Liszt: Paganini-Etude No.2 in E-flat major
Liszt: Rhapsodie Espagnole
Encores:
Mendelssohn: Song without words in C major, Op.67 No.4 (Spinning Song)
Schubert/Liszt: Liebesbotschaft
Horowitz: Carmen Variations
I discovered that gem when I was assembling a hypothetical “early Liszt” recital!
Transcendental, and even more interesting in that they don’t seem to have revised versions.
Offtopic but here is that Liszt recital I imagined:
(Ideal pianist if not me: Claudio Arrau, preferably in his 30s of age)
1st Part
Prelude: Ricordanza 1st ver. (Etudes in 12 exercises) -
La Clochette
La muette de portici Tarantella
“Waldenstadt” (?) lake and the Spring (from Album d’un voyageur)
Harmonies poetiques et religieuses (the first version)
Valse infernale (by Meyerbeer)
Intermission -
2nd Part
Romanian Rhapsody from Magyar rapsodiak (love the “Indian-sounding” theme)
Apparitions nos. 1-3
Norma Fantasy
Don Juan Fantasy
Possible encore: Paganini etude 4b, 1838
This recital would have short talks in between some pieces. All in all, the entire thing should not exceed 3 hours!
Okay - ontopic.
A recital that I think would be good:
I’m thinking of perhaps:
(Ideal pianist if not me: Vladimir Horowitz)
1st Half
A bunch of Czerny etudes up to 10m
Clementi Sonata in dm, Op. 50 no. 2 (maybe)
Haydn f Major (minor?) adagio
An own composition about 5-7m long
Clementi Toccata in Bb Major
2nd Half
Alkan Hands Reunited
Liszt Norma
Liszt Apparitions (all 3)
Scriabin Sonata no. 4
Encore: Art Tatum Elegy arrangement *
I wrote this whole post before I noticed that some posters used an “ideal pianist”. To admit it, Horowitz playing something by Tatum would be…a strange mix of amusing, amazing, and interesting (I intended myself to play it but attached Horowitz as ideal pianist later, then forgot I placed Elegy first lol).
