It’s an excellent recording and I wish we had a live rec, I know he programmed it around the time of his only studio rec. Insane clarity or not. Best ever? I dun believe in rankings

Imho some of the most interesting Brahms Paganini’s on record include: Richter, Gilels (book 1 only alas), Petri (a bit over pedaled but “truway”), Backhaus (several recs), Michelangeli live (regrettable cheats in da last Var of Book 1).
I wish we had live Cziffra, Horowitz (he did a selection of 12 from both books) Rosenthal and especially Friedman in this.
Yuja kinda beasts them btw, as does Kissin (I like his various live bootlegs of it floating around).
Countless young pianists now play these vars expertly btw. Can’t name all of them.

I know Cziffra programmed them live even after the studio rec, I think the last time was Germany 1967 - but no live rec surfaced.
I wonder how gensui Horowitz sounded in these (he played em until 1942) and which vars he played specifically (probably different each time).
That’s right! They were blessed back then to do it with two 78rpm sides per book tho (no editing tho).
