Da CUDA passed away on dis date, 33 years ago

Da :rectum: said da CUDA was out of line wiz da commie party n dey switched up hiz routine shot at da hospital wiz sum otha medication… to kill him

Whether or not there is any truth to that is a different story tru

Rezpek da CUDA?
Whut iz yo fave cuda recs?

Off da top of my head:

many of the Tchaik 1 recs, I’d go fo da 1947 studio pozz
Early recs: pimp buz fingaro (sic), paget 5, rappah 6

Bach-Buz D major pf from da 1954 concert… yuuuuuge

Da Bach-Siloti prel, even tho it sounds like a pop tune. I like da 40’s rec most pozz

Da Ravel Pavane (1969 I think…)
Da GREG lyric pieces (nuff said)

Apparently da Gilels had a mild strep through n decided to visit one of da best hospitals in Moscow, where he may have recieved an injection…

As everyone is bound to know here by now I’m not the Cuda (wtf?) fan I should be, but it has to be something with Beethoven. His Appassionata perhaps. I also remember he did a great concerto set, but I haven’t listened to him play any of them except the Emperor in well over a decade. His Liszt Sonata is also one of the best IMO, likewise the Prok-8. Well and in terms of pianistic finish and musical integrity just about everything he ever played really, I think he was remarkably consistent.

his best stuff is live, apart from the Figaro. I loved his 32 variations in C minor (from LA iirc), as well as a live Appassionata (unfortuantely he didn’t play the repeat in the last movement). I also love his Brahms 2 with Reiner.

Here are my favourites:

  • Beethoven Concertos (Prague 1950s)
  • Appassionata/Chopin Sonata 2 (Prague 1954)
  • Liszt Sonata (Moscow 1961)
  • Brahms Concerto 2 (Reiner 1958)
  • Bach French Suite 5 (Studio)
  • Liszt-Busoni Figaro / HR 6 / HR 9
  • Prok Sonata 8 (Moscow 1967)
  • Rach / Schumann / Brahms Recital 1977
  • Saint-Saens 2 / Rach 3rd (studio)
  • Tchaik 1 (Mravinsky)
  • Waldstein (1947)
  • Random Carnaval and Chopin Preludes

Probably tons more. I don’t listen to Gilels as much as I used to. Not sure why.

Why do you call him Cuda? Because of what it means in Russian?

Gilels -> gills --> Barracuda (a fast fish, though not the fastest) --> Cuda.

One of the most random SDC nicknames, along with da HOG and da CIGAR :sunglasses:

This performance always wows me. My intro to him was the Rach 23/5 on the Art of Piano.

I don’t exactly remember the story being the HOG? I feel like this is a Zepp nick that came from when we used to listen to lots of his recs on MP3.com or Ampcast or one of these places.

I still want to know who da fuckwad is. I asked, but no one wanted to tell me.

And sure enough who are da hog & da cigar?

Hog is Fiorentino, though I haven’t used that nickname for 10 years or so. Cigar I think is Gutierrez, presumably because he’s Cuban.

Maybe he’s called The Hog because real men like Sergio can just sit back and chill when they’ve got a huge one.

Gilels’ early Rameau Le rappel des oiseaux is by far my fav. recording

Am I completely crazy for not being into the Gilels Liszt Sonata recs (1948, 1961 and 1965 studio)?

I suppose Richter (and Horowitz) really spoiled mah azz!

My favourite recording of Gilels is strangely enough NOT a piano solo work, it’s the Brahms G minor Quartet Opus 25 (with membahs of da Amadeus Q.)…I’ve listened to it dozens of times and it never bores me. I think Gilels later in his life was a great Brahmsian.
