This sounds curiously hiss free for 1957 Maybe a cap from a stream or some rough clean up work or is fakish
Audience response way different on this bumble bee BEFORE and after. If you just saw a early Cziffra in 57 don’t think you’d sit quietly to hear what is up then lightly ramp in clapping like you are ending a tea party.
So, thanks for voting everyone. As I wrote in earlier OPs the notion of one TRUGOD MAZTAH peninizt is pretty meaningless of course - there are lots of ways to play the piano, and my favourite recordings of various works come from a multitude of musicians with different personalities, styles and ways of thinking about music - but I’ve still been pondering this, who people would choose if they were forced to name someone as the greatest. My pick would have been Richter, and I had a strong hunch this would be the general consensus as well - which you, though through a tiny sample set, have strengthened here.
I have to say the spread between our preferences was larger than I anticipated though, which is great. As long as people can explain WHAT it is which makes them prefer a certain pianist or recording, I often find it more rewarding to talk to people who have different preferences than my own since it sometimes helps me see things in different lights and from different perspectives too, which is how we grow (although most of the time they are simply WRONG, of course ).
