I would say that anything under 9th is small…I can reach an 10ths comfortably with my left hand and I still have to roll tenths in the Liszt to play it at tempo
Also because the e to g sharp interval is pretty much an 11th
Overall I much prefer the thirds, guess that makes me a pussy too
To me it looks like Scriabin has a rule where any chord larger than 2 octaves, rolling will be indicated with tied grace notes
For smaller chords he doesn’t bother
And iirc I don’t think Schumann indicated a single arpeggio sign in his life, not even for his monster 15th intervals. Not his problem to deal with so he let other people figure it out I guess.
Liebeslied is only 10ths, and then perfectly suited to spread.
Da worst offender is da Franck. Bloody organ writing minus da feet. Da violin zon is a cock to figure out how to break all those ridiculous chords effectively. (Amazing zong though)
No, I guess he could play 10ths on a modern grand, too
There’s an anecdote, I believe from when he was already pretty old (so when key size was already similar to our grands), that he admitted to a pupil that he could just play the final chords of the slow mvmt. of the Hammerklavier without breaking them.
