The interesting thing about Lupu is that in recent times (say the last 10-15 years) a common complaint is that he’s been in his own world up on stage, just playing for himself, and that he can’t really be heard beyond the close-in rows. I heard him last year, from the 9th row (but keyboard side) and I could hear him okay, but it didn’t really seem like he cared about projection.

I would have heard him 25+ years ago, at the Royal Festival Hall. Playing Schubert D.960 before everyone and his dog was programming it. Possibly some late Brahms as well, but I might be thinking of another concert for that. From what I gather in his last years of concert activity he would rather have been watching football!
