overrated and underrated concertos...

Just curious as to what everyone opinion is of the most overrated and underrated piano concertos are. Mine are as follows:

Over:
Rach 3
Rach 2
Grieg

Under:
SCRIABIN!!!
Hummel A minor
Kancerto (if that counts)

disagreed

underatd prick 5 :gav: :rectum:

I wouldn’t say the Rachs are overrated, simply overplayed.

Underrated:
Bort 1
Mozkowski
Medtner 1 and 2
Scriabin
Liszt 2nd
Mendelssohn 2
Henselt
Marx (Joseph, not Karl)
Dvorak
Saint Saens 4 and 5

Agreed, there is a big difference.

Also re Bort for some reason I think the 2nd and third are stronger than the first.

The cadenza from the 1st concerto kicks so much ass, though.
Wish there were better recordings of the 2nd and 3rd.

Some interesting choices. I don’t really agree about the SS 4, randomly never heard my interest compared to the others. Haven’t heard enough of 5 to have much of an opinion, but will get back to you on that. Definitely agree with the Dvorak. I remember listening to richter play it and it was gorgeous. I’ll have to admit tho, half of your list I haven’t really listened to lol

About the rach 3, I’ve tried (really tried) to listen to a bunch of recordings of it, different pianists. Even some of the so called ā€œgood onesā€ just left feeling…ehh. The cadenza isn’t bad, start of third movement has some fury, but I am left about the same as I did going in to it. The rach 2 is a little better, but outside of the first movement, the other two movements are a little underwhelming.

The Prik 5 wears out it’s welcome a little with the 5 movements and all, but def doesn’t deserve it’s ā€œProkofiev made 5 concertos?ā€ status. Some good gensui throughout.

if they can be counted as concerti,

Strauss Burleskse
Szymanowski Sinfonia Concertante
Scriabin Prometheus

under:
Mozart K449

Why not Medtner 3?

da zharwankah haf much gensui n fury

Never grabbed me much, but then again the only recording I’ve heard is Demidenko’s.

yeah, the 3rd is my favourite although I had to give it more of a chance than the other two (the first didn’t initially appeal to me either). But all 3 are now some of my favourites…
I reckon Tozer’s is the best no.3, I think it’s pretty awesome.

Also, what’s a decent rec of Tchaikovsky 3rd concerto? (just the one movement). I have Hough & Pletnev, and have heard Tozer’s.
I think it’s just a shame because Pletnev’s rec has such a skewed balance so the piano is sometimes barely audible. Tozer’s is probably my favourite there too…

Thanks for the tip, I’ll definitely check out Tozer’s.

tozer pretty much owned all three medtner concertos. demidenko is an absolute joke, if you ask me. scherbakov is decent, though. i would say that medtner’s 3rd is a tough nut to crack, but is a wonderful work once you warm up to it.

its a shame that more people arent mentioning more modern concertos as being underrated. many of them just get played a few times and then just fall into obscurity, even if they are of high quality. they will become the obscure piano concertos that people will talk about in 50-100 years, just as we talk so much about these obscure romantic piano concertos today.

tha PENDAH - cello con 1

Pendah??

Penderecki

Tompilk: Try Gilels, Donohoe, Postnikova and Leonskaja for Tchaik 3.

agreed. penderecki’s cello concerto is simply one of the most furious pieces ever written for any (combination of) instrument(s). shame that only 2 people have recorded it. it sounds different every time its played, as with much of penderecki’s early music.

two concerti I would play if I were a pro (and had the opportunity): Ruby 3 and 4. Love them. I used to be crazy about the Henselt but now I think it’s probably too calorie heavy since there’s a lot of piano ā€˜accompaniment’.
