All the Youtube pianists (Rousseau, Lisitsa, Vinteheiro, etc.) are heavily overrated by the masses but that is to be expected.
Serkin is a very niche pianist. His Beethoven either comes off as overly dry and harsh or masterful and vivid. He was always more concerned with overall structure than the color of phrases or notes.
Horowitz is great of course but overrated? On paper, yes. He never had a large repertoire, his technique was brilliant but never flawless, and he was never the “best” interpreter of any specific composer (at least imo). But some of his recordings are just so magical that I can’t help but think that all the adulation is deserved.
Haven’t been following this… you all decide between schiff and entremont yet?
In their day Ted Joselson Andrew Tchaikovsky probably worst pianists to hold a multi Rec contract.
OK, his performing repertoire was certainly expansive. But compared to guys like Richter and Arrau, Horowitz never seemed to dive as deep into any particular composer. He never recorded all of the Chopin etudes/preludes, WTC, Mozart/Beethoven/Schubert sonatas, concerti, etc.
Daim! do u remembah wut tym of year it wuz? Would dat make Entremont 900 or 901 yrz old? hiz hayday wuz circa 1960 haha
