imo da real class of a pianist is when they sit down and the tone just projects on any 88. No mumbling bs and a real exact touch.
that sort of thing does not always come through on a studio rec, rather, deficiencies in projection easily hid in da studio.

but I’m biased because the only time I heard him live he played some mumbling bs while plate conducted. He’s releasing a ton of recs tho 
I saw him when he was still young in rach 1 and it was scorching and that liszt recital he toured with. Perfect control but less alive / present than a Trif perf yeah.
