god im 10 seconds in and I hate it- whats the tempo marking!? Non troppo presto- ok, cziffra just plays prestisssimo molto rubato. very cute… but brahms is incredibly careful in his variations in regards to tempo relations between variations, ESPECIALLY PAG BK 1!!!

ok yes im being a bit of a troll, but honestly I see the Brahms-Paganini as his treatise on anti-liszt virtuosity, it’s supposed to have a sort-of steely German sachlichkeit and not just get tossed off like a showpiece.
did Cziffra play the Liszt paganini etudes? or scarlatti? those I can imagine liking. Or early Mozart!!
