Yes… there’s this autumnal quality to Brendel’s sound at the piano, which I like a lot. And as always the readings have an almost psychological tone over them. I think Herr Doktor Professor Alf is underrated by pianophiles, overrated by the masses.
As to the music it is my firm opinion that any work by Liszt which sounds off simply hasn’t found its pianist yet. The Weihnachtsbaum is as close as he ever got to Tchaikovsky’s composing-on-demand, and even in here you find a bit of essence of the world, captured & encapsulated.
